What are the main differences between each taper? Toolholders come in different tapers because they are designed to be compatible with different types of machine tools and cutting applications. Different machine tools may have different spindle tapers, which determines the type of toolholder that can be used. In addition, different types of cutting tools, such as end mills, drills, and taps, may require different types of toolholders to properly secure them to the machine tool spindle.
Some common types of toolholder tapers include BT, SK (DIN69871), ISO (DIN2080), HSK, and PSC (Polygon Shank). The choice of toolholder taper depends on the specific application and the machine tool being used, and choosing the right taper is an important factor in ensuring compatibility and reliable performance.
Generally speaking, what machines are these toolholders mounted on?
BT (also known as BT MAS) toolholders are commonly used in machine tool centers in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the United States.
SK (also known as DIN69871) tapers are used in machining centers in Germany and Europe, and these tapers can also be used in American machining centers with CAT40/CAT50 tools.
ISO (also known as DIN2080) toolholders are commonly used on traditional (manual) milling machines with manual or automatic drawbars.
HSK (also known as DIN69873) toolholders are mainly used in high-speed CNC machining centers, especially those with spindle speeds of 10,000 RPM or higher. HSK bevel gears were developed in Germany and are popular in Europe and other parts of the world due to their excellent performance in high-speed machining applications. HSK tapers have a hollow shank design that transmits power to the tool more directly and efficiently, resulting in better accuracy, stability, and cutting performance.

How are they clamped on the machine tool and why?
BT, SK and ISO toolholders have a steeper taper. These are usually clamped into the machine tool using a drawbar inside the spindle to clamp a draw screw located on the back of the taper. This type of taper tends to be a more traditional approach and can lose accuracy when running at extremely high speeds. There are also taper ratios of 1:10.
The HSK taper (German abbreviation for hollow taper shank) is classed as double contact, which means it maintains contact on the spindle taper and flange on the spindle face, creating a strong connection axially and radially. This creates resistance to axial movement and prevents the toolholder from being pulled around, making it ideal for higher speeds.
The taper ratio of HSK holders is 7:24, and there are different types such as HSK-A, HSK-C, HSK-E, HSK-F. The main factor affecting HSK taper depends on the speed or torque requirements.
What are the output types available on each type?
BT, SK and HSK taper toolholders are the most commonly used toolholders in the UK manufacturing industry. Therefore, there is usually a comprehensive range of these options. This means that all the common performance options are included, such as side clamps, collets and face milling toolholders, but also higher performance toolholders such as hydraulic and shrink fit toolholders.
ISO (DIN2080) toolholders are a bit outdated now, so you can usually only find more traditional options such as side clamps and collets. This is largely due to the spindle speed limitations of DIN2080 machines, which will make the use of higher speed fixtures unfeasible.
Finally, PSC (Capto compatible) toolholders can be used for CNC milling machines and lathes. Traditional milling toolholders include ER collets, side clamps and face milling toolholders, while turning toolholders include boring bars, turning tools and thread turning toolholders.
