1. Core advantages: Performance leap brought by coating
The advantages of color-coated blades compared to uncoated regular blades are cross-dimensional:
· The "heat insulation layer" effect greatly improves the red hardness: the coating (such as the common golden TiN, blue gray TiAlN) has a low thermal conductivity and can block cutting heat on the blade surface like a heat insulation layer. In particular, the TiAlN coating will form a layer of aluminum oxide protective film at high temperatures, allowing the blade to maintain its hardness at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 1000°C, enabling high-speed cutting of "heating with heat".
· Self-lubricating and anti-adhesion, bid farewell to "built-up edge": the coating surface has a low friction coefficient, which can effectively reduce the friction between chips and tools. Especially when processing sticky materials such as stainless steel and titanium alloys, colored coatings can greatly inhibit the generation of built-up edge, directly resulting in a surface finish with a 30%-50% reduction in Ra value.
· The "golden balance" of hardness and toughness: The coating (hardness up to HV 3000-4000) assumes the task of wear resistance, while the internal carbide matrix retains toughness. This "hard outside and soft inside" structure makes the blade's wear resistance 3-5 times higher than that of uncoated materials, and its chipping resistance is much better than that of ceramic blades.
· Reliable production "stabilizer": high-quality color coatings with extremely uniform thickness and adhesion, and extremely predictable life. This is crucial in unmanned automatic production lines - you can accurately know "when to change the tool" to avoid batch scrapping due to sudden tool failure.
2. Application timing: Choose the right color to get twice the result with half the effort
Coatings of different colors have their own "best" scenarios:
· Golden yellow (TiN coating) - general wear-resistant choice: suitable for light to medium load cutting of carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel. Best time: Rough machining of ordinary turning and milling; medium and low-speed working conditions that have certain requirements for surface finish, but the temperature is not extreme.
· Blue-grey/purple-black (TiAlN/AlTiN) - high-speed and high-temperature killer: suitable for high-speed finishing of difficult-to-machine materials (such as hardened steel, high-temperature alloys, titanium alloys). Best time: dry cutting or high-pressure cooling environment; when extremely high cutting speed (more than 50% higher than TiN) is required to improve efficiency.
· Dark brown/black (TiCN) - impact-resistant tough guy: higher hardness than TiN and better toughness. Best time: processing cast iron and powder metallurgy materials; working conditions with intermittent cutting (such as grooved workpieces) or impact loads to prevent edge chipping.
· Special composite coating (such as DLC diamond-like carbon) - non-ferrous metal expert: dark gray or rainbow color, extremely low friction coefficient. Best time: finishing aluminum alloy, copper alloy, plastic and other soft and sticky materials to achieve mirror effect and eliminate sticking.
3. Practical decision list
Working conditions Recommended selection Reasons
Continuous cutting, material hardness <HRC30 TiN coating (gold), low cost, sufficient wear resistance
High-speed processing, material hardness HRC30-50 TiAlN coating (blue gray) high temperature resistance, allowing higher line speeds
Cast iron or with interrupted cutting TiCN coating (dark brown) Impact resistance, crater wear resistance
Finished aluminum alloy/copper DLC or uncoated PCD anti-stick knife to maintain smooth finish
The cutting fluid is unstable or tends to dry cutting. TiAlN/AlTiN coating has good high temperature performance and is suitable for dry cutting.
4. "Pits" that need to be avoided
Colored blades are not everything:
· Not suitable for low-speed re-cutting: The coating cannot form a protective oxide film at low speeds. Instead, it peels off due to insufficient friction and heat. In this case, uncoated or CBN blades are better.
· Not suitable for rough machining of soft and sticky materials (pure aluminum, copper): the coating has a strong affinity with soft metals and is prone to adhesion, which in turn aggravates wear.
· Coating failure after sharpening: Re-sharpening will destroy the coating and greatly reduce the performance.
The core value of colored blades does not lie in "color", but in the comprehensive improvement of "wear resistance, heat resistance, and anti-adhesion" achieved through coating technology. When your processing requires surface roughness ≤ Ra1.6, cutting speed exceeding 150m/min, or processing difficult-to-gnaw materials such as stainless steel and cast iron, it is the answer that can help you reduce costs and increase efficiency.
