Kunshan Meiyaxing Hardware Machinery Co., Ltd. is a direct branch of Hong Kong Meiya International Trading Co., Ltd. in China. It owns its own cutting tool brand: MANF, and engages in the sales and operation of CNC cutting tools. It provides tungsten carbide end mills, milling inserts, turning inserts, grooving and parting inserts, drilling and boring inserts, multi-functional inserts, threading inserts, and other indexable inserts and their matching tool holders and tool holders. Furthermore, it has established long-term strategic partnerships with many well-known manufacturers, with joint R&D, design, and production teams, advanced equipment, and continuously innovative technological strength. It is committed to mutual cooperation, guided by technical services, forming a mutually supportive industrial chain to solve various machining problems for processing and manufacturing enterprises.
Small parts machining, seemingly simple, actually places extremely stringent requirements on cutting tools-the tool diameter may be only 0.1 mm, and it can break easily with the slightest carelessness. The cutting process is difficult to observe with the naked eye. Achieving efficient and precise machining at such a scale requires a different approach than conventional machining.
How to Use Small Parts Cutting Tools
1. Selection Principle: Precision and Rigidity First
· Tool Material: For non-ferrous metals and non-metallic materials, diamond tools offer extremely high durability and excellent surface finish. PCD tool life can be dozens of times longer than that of cemented carbide tools, and they are commonly used in the mass production of small parts in industries such as automotive and home appliances.
• Insert Structure: For machining small parts, multi-functional inserts with five cutting edges, such as the PENTA 17 series, should be prioritized. These inserts cover parting, grooving, turning, and threading, and offer high repeatability.
• Tool Holder Selection: Use tool holders with the highest possible rigidity and adapt them to the head design of small machine tools.
2. Operating Points: Handle with care and control precisely.
• Radial Runout Control: Micro-tools are extremely sensitive to radial runout. For a 0.020-inch diameter tool, a radial runout exceeding 0.0002 inches can cause chipping. High-quality tool holders (such as thermocouple chucks) are required to ensure strict concentricity between the spindle and the tool holder.
• Cutting Speed and Spindle Speed: Conventional machine tool spindles (12,000 rpm) are far from sufficient for small-diameter tools, with cutting speeds potentially as low as 19 m/min. Using an additional high-speed spindle (80,000 rpm recommended) is crucial for maximizing the performance of micro-tools.
• Non-contact Measurement and Monitoring: Micro-tools are difficult to observe with the naked eye. It is recommended to use a zoom lens camera for monitoring the machining process and employ a non-contact tool measuring device to measure offset, avoiding physical contact that could cause tool bending.
• Cooling and Chip Removal: Poor chip removal is one of the main causes of micro-tool damage. A micro-spray cooling system using alcohol (ethanol) as the coolant is recommended. Its low viscosity allows it to effectively reach the cutting edge and leaves no residue after evaporation, making it particularly suitable for non-ferrous metal machining. Ensure sufficient coolant is sprayed onto the tool tip and maintain a constant machining speed.
• Operating Habits: Tools must be handled manually to avoid collisions; use flexible clamps and torque wrenches to prevent workpiece deformation during clamping.
3. Typical Machining Strategy: Small Step Pitch, High Feed Rate
This machining strategy employs high speed, small step pitch, and high feed rate. The chips carry away most of the cutting heat, reducing workpiece temperature rise and cutting force, making it particularly suitable for precision machining of thin-walled small parts. During parting, the feed near the center should be reduced to 1/2 to 1/3 to prevent impact chipping during parting.
The success or failure of machining small parts often depends not on how advanced the equipment is, but on meticulous attention to detail-a sharp cutting edge, precise concentricity, smooth chip removal, and a mindset of treating tiny parts like precision instruments.
