Kunshan Meiyaxing Hardware Machinery Co., Ltd. is a direct branch of Hong Kong Meiya International Trading Co., Ltd. in China. It owns its own cutting tool brand: MANF, and engages in the sales and operation of CNC cutting tools. It provides tungsten carbide end mills, milling inserts, turning inserts, grooving and parting inserts, drilling and boring inserts, multi-functional inserts, threading inserts, and other indexable inserts and their matching tool holders and tool holders. Furthermore, it has established long-term strategic partnerships with many well-known manufacturers, with joint R&D, design, and production teams, advanced equipment, and continuously innovative technological strength. It is committed to mutual cooperation, guided by technical services, forming a mutually supportive industrial chain to solve various processing problems for manufacturing enterprises.
In the field of machining, roughing and finishing are like a sculptor's initial work and final touches-the former is responsible for "removing the roughness," while the latter determines the "appearance." Precision turning inserts play a crucial role in completing this final finishing touch.
When must precision turning inserts be used?
1. When the part has a specific surface roughness requirement.
When the drawing specifies Ra... 1. For requirements of 1.6μm, 0.8μm, or higher, roughing inserts are inadequate. The obtuse angle and large depth of cut of roughing inserts leave obvious tool marks on the surface, which can only be smoothed out by finishing inserts.
2. Strict dimensional tolerances are required.
For tolerances within ±0.01mm for outer diameters and inner holes, or for applications requiring high taper or cylindricity, finishing inserts must be used in the finishing stage. Roughing inserts experience significant wear and thermal deformation, making it impossible to consistently meet these precision requirements.
3. Machining thin-walled parts, slender shafts, and soft materials.
These workpieces are prone to deformation under cutting forces. For example, machining a 1mm thick thin-walled sleeve with roughing inserts will result in excessive ovality; while the sharp cutting edge and extremely small depth of cut of finishing inserts can control deformation to the micrometer level.
4. Final Finishing Process of Parts
This is the classic application of finishing inserts-after roughing, the part is finished with one or two passes. Commonly used for high-requirement parts such as hydraulic valve cores, motor shafts, piston rods, and mold cores.
5. Final Forming of Difficult-to-Machine Materials
For materials such as hardened steel (HRC 45-55), stainless steel, and high-temperature alloys, finishing requires specially designed finishing inserts (such as CBN or ceramic finishing inserts) and extremely high linear speeds to achieve a "turning instead of grinding" effect.
When is it not advisable to use finishing inserts?
· Heavy cutting or rough surfaces: Finishing inserts have fragile cutting edges and are easily chipped when encountering black skin, hard spots, or large depths of cut.
· Intermittent cutting: Unless specially selected high-strength finishing inserts are used, it is not recommended for intermittent surfaces such as splines and keyways.
· Roughing stage: Using finishing inserts for large-scale material removal is neither economical nor easy to damage the tool.
Several reminders for using finishing inserts
· * **Manifestation Allowance:** Finishing allowance is typically 0.2-0.5mm (one side). Too large an allowance will overload the tool, while too small an allowance may prevent reaching the true dimensions.
* **Parameter Matching:** Finishing is recommended with high speed, low feed (0.05-0.15mm/r), and low depth of cut. Avoid using roughing parameters to "make do."
* **Tool Clamping Must Be Secure:** Even minute vibrations can leave chatter marks on the finished surface. Ensure accurate tool tip height and reliable locking. Finishing inserts are not a panacea, but without them, machining high-precision parts would be impossible. Their value lies not in "how deep they can cut," but in "how well they can cut." When your part's surface reflects like a mirror and its dimensions pass perfectly through the gauge within the tolerance zone, you'll understand-this small finishing insert was well worth the investment.
