4. Consider using a specialized tapping lubricant
Most machine coolants, especially water-soluble ones, are not suitable for tapping because oils, on the other hand, offer better lubricity than water.
If you encounter machining problems, try using a specialized tapping lubricant. Place it next to the machine, fill it with a container, and program the G-code to automatically dip the tap into the cup. Alternatively, you can try coating the tap to increase lubricity.
5. Use the correct tapping toolholder (recommendation only)
Let's talk about tapping toolholders. First, use a tool that locks the square shank inside the tapping toolholder so it won't rotate in the holder. Because tapping requires a lot of torque, having a properly locked shank helps with the tapping oil. You can achieve this with a tap chuck or a special ER tap chuck.
Second, even if your machine supports rigid tapping, consider floating toolholders. Floating toolholders are necessary in situations without rigid tapping, but even in most rigid tapping situations, they can extend tap life. This is because the machine tool is limited by the acceleration of the spindle and axes, which cannot synchronize the tap with the thread being machined. There is always some axial force pushing against the tap. Shifting or pulling. A floating toolholder can relieve stress caused by a lack of synchronization.
6. Use spiral-fluted taps in appropriate situations.
If you're machining blind holes, poor chip evacuation is probably the most common cause of tap breakage. This is why we use spiral-fluted taps. They push chips upward. Please note that spiral-fluted taps are not as impact-resistant as more common tip-end taps and are recommended for blind holes.
