Processing Tips for CBN, PCD, and Ceramic Blades:
- PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) is a synthetic diamond (up to 95% diamond, bonded to a tungsten carbide substrate). However, the diamond component is essentially pure carbon. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid using PCD to process iron-containing materials such as steel and cast iron, as high temperatures can cause carbon atoms to react with the material, forming iron carbide and potentially degrading the diamond structure.
- Despite its hardness, PCD is also very brittle, making it unsuitable for unstable processing conditions where vibrations may occur. Additionally, the use of coolant is generally recommended when machining with PCD tools.
- Ceramic blades, while not universally applicable, require careful handling during processing. Due to their brittleness, it is advisable to select a thicker blade whenever possible. Ceramic blades necessitate very high cutting speeds and advanced geometric designs, suitable for both roughing and finishing operations. Secure holding of ceramic blades can be achieved using a wedge or top clamp bar. While coolant can be used, it is not recommended for certain applications.
- The primary component of CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) is boron. These blades are primarily designed for cutting hardened steel (HRc50-70) and excel in high-precision machining. No coolant is required for CBN blade processing.
- PCD blades are most effective for processing non-ferrous materials. Although PCD exhibits greater toughness than natural diamond, it remains relatively brittle compared to other cutting materials.
- Aluminum is the most frequently processed material using PCD, followed by plastic and brass.
Tool Holder Recommendations:
- To achieve optimal results with CBN and PCD turning blades, a standard boring bar is recommended for internal diameters, while a double-lock modular clamping turning tool is ideal for external diameters. The dual clamping system minimizes vibration and extends tool life. The use of coolant enhances chip removal and tool longevity.
- For ceramic turning blades, specialized turning tools and boring bars are available, offering maximum cutting performance and tool life. Given the unique geometry of ceramic blades, which does not conform to the standard clamping methods of conventional tool bars, a wedge or top clamping mechanism is employed to securely hold the blade in place.
