In the world of CNC turning, every tool mark is a trade-off between efficiency and precision. If an 80° tool tip angle is a powerful punch in roughing, then a 35° diamond-shaped insert is the finishing tool. A nimble and sharp dagger for the industrial field. When this "precision dagger" is adorned with a vibrant, high-performance coating, it brings not only visual innovation but also a comprehensive leap in cutting performance.
I. 35° Diamond-Shaped Inserts: Geometric Aesthetics Born for Finishing
35° diamond-shaped turning inserts, whose ISO standard codes typically begin with the letter "V," are cutting tools specifically designed for semi-finishing and finishing turning processes. Compared to 80° or 55° diamond-shaped inserts, the unique 35° tip angle design gives it two core advantages: Sharper cutting ability. A smaller tip angle gives the tool a sharper cutting edge, significantly reducing radial resistance during cutting. This makes 35° inserts particularly suitable for precision machining scenarios with small depths of cut and small feed rates. In machining easily deformable workpieces such as thin-walled parts and slender shafts, it minimizes vibration, effectively preventing tool deflection and ensuring high form and position tolerances.
Greater accessibility and flexibility. The narrow, elongated geometry of 35° allows the insert to have a longer machining length, easily approaching complex workpiece contours and handling end faces, chamfers, and concave surfaces with ease.
In the finishing field, 35° inserts are mainly divided into two mainstream types: one is the positive rake angle structure insert represented by VCMT, which uses a positive rake angle design with an extremely sharp cutting edge. Combined with finely ground chip breaker grooves, it achieves extremely low cutting forces and a smooth chip removal experience, making it particularly suitable for light cutting scenarios that pursue the ultimate surface finish; the other is the VNMG... Negative rake angle inserts, represented by those with a strong cutting edge, excellent wear resistance and impact resistance, and higher cutting force, are a reliable choice for handling hardened steel and high-load continuous machining.
II. Colored Coatings: The Performance Code Beneath the Surface
When we talk about "colored inserts," the colors represent the silent declaration of nanoscale coating technology. Each color corresponds to a unique coating material system, and thus to different machining characteristics and adaptability to different working conditions. Among them, PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coatings, with their advantages of being environmentally friendly, dense, and minimizing edge sharpness loss, have become the mainstream choice for precision turning inserts. Their coating thickness is typically between 2-5 micrometers, maximizing the preservation of the 35° cutting edge geometry.
Below are some mainstream PVD coatings and their color "identity cards":
• Golden Yellow (TiN Coating) TiN coating is a veteran in the coating industry. Its hardness is approximately 2300-2500 HV, and its oxidation resistance temperature is approximately 600°C. It is relatively inexpensive, versatile, and performs excellently in low-to-medium speed cutting of steel and cast iron, exhibiting good anti-adhesion properties.
• Blue-gray/violet (TiCN coating): Hardness is increased to 3000-3500 HV, but its high-temperature resistance is slightly inferior to TiN. Its excellent anti-adhesion wear capability makes it outstanding in machining materials prone to chip adhesion, such as stainless steel and titanium alloys, making it a powerful tool for handling "difficult" materials.
• Purplish-black/bronze (TiAlN/AlTiN coating): A mainstay in modern cutting. Hardness reaches 3000-3500+ HV, and its oxidation resistance temperature is 800-900°C. It has excellent high-temperature red hardness; a dense alumina film forms on the surface of the cutting zone at high temperatures, carrying away heat with the chips. It is a core coating for achieving high-speed dry cutting and hard machining (below HRC 50).
• Grayish-brown/bronze (CBN coating): When cubic boron nitride (CBN), an ultra-hard material, is coated, its hardness and wear resistance are further enhanced. Different colors of CBN coatings (such as golden yellow, bronze, and grayish-brown) correspond to differentiated scenarios from general machining to ultra-high-speed continuous machining, and even to strong interrupted cutting, making it the ultimate tool for hardened steel turning (HRC 50 and above).
Dark gray/silver gray (AlCrN coating): As a representative of high-end coatings, AlCrN possesses extremely high hardness, excellent toughness, and thermal shock resistance. Its oxidation resistance temperature can reach 1000°C, making it particularly suitable for interrupted cutting and dry cutting under high impact loads, as well as machining highly viscous and difficult-to-machine materials such as stainless steel and high-temperature alloys. It performs exceptionally well in mold making and harsh working conditions.
